After much posturing by all political parties, Finance Minister Ralph Goodale tabled an economic statement this afternoon. What should have been a rather mundane event, took on a circus-like air as the economic statement became a mini-budget and a plank in the Liberal election platform. This was ensured by the opposition parties uniting to promise the forthcoming defeat of the Government. For the most part, the tax changes involve a few immediate tax rate cuts and a few longer term cuts, which are designed to see the light of day over an extended period from now until 2010. Of course, the unspoken threat is that we won’t see these cuts if there is not a strong Liberal government elected.
